Head of International Development at Twitter, Mike Brown, is currently in Australia. All signs point to Twitter opening a local office here in Australia in the near future. Recently they set up the official @TwitterAU account, have been verifying Australian sports teams and entertainment accounts (like AFL and FFA) and have even had some T-shirts printed.

While Mike Brown is in Australia, he’ll be attending some secret invite-only breakfast events organised by Sports Geek’s Sean Callanan, targeted at the sports and entertainment niches, as well as high profile Australian tweeters. Notable names include Darren Rowse, Wil Anderson, Charlie Pickering, George Calombaris and Wendell Sailor. Interestingly, Twitter has requested that media are not invited.

I’ll be one of the lucky ones attending the Sydney event. If you’re not attending, you can follow all the action with the hashtag #twitterbrekky

It makes sense for Twitter to have a local presence, especially considering their increased focus on advertising. Some social media experts are even predicting that Twitter will overtake Facebook as the number one brand advertising platform. What are your predictions for 2013 and beyond?
